New era for James Bond as Amazon MGM assumes creative reins
Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli step back from Bond production
Amazon MGM Studios has officially taken creative control of the James Bond film franchise, marking a significant shift in the management of one of cinema’s most iconic series. This change comes after Amazon established a new joint venture with longtime custodians Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who have overseen the franchise for decades. While Wilson and Broccoli will remain co-owners, the new agreement allows Amazon MGM to lead the creative direction of future Bond films.
This development follows a period of uncertainty regarding the franchise’s future, particularly after the release of “No Time to Die” in 2021, which was Daniel Craig’s final outing as the British spy.
Relations between Amazon and the Broccoli family had reportedly become strained, leading to concerns about the direction of upcoming films. With this new arrangement, Amazon aims to expand the Bond franchise beyond traditional cinema, potentially incorporating more content for its Prime Video platform.
The Bond franchise has been a lucrative venture since its inception in 1962, grossing nearly $8 billion at the global box office. The partnership with Amazon is expected to usher in a new era for 007, with Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, expressing enthusiasm for continuing the legacy of this beloved character.
Wilson stated that after nearly 60 years in the role, he is stepping back to focus on other artistic and charitable projects. Both he and Broccoli acknowledged that it was time for Amazon MGM Studios to take the reins and guide James Bond into the future.
